Astypalea, also known as Astypalea, is an island in the Aegean Sea. Although administratively part of the Dodecanese, it belongs geographically, historically and architecturally to the Cyclades. The island offers arid, mountainous landscapes and villages with whitewashed cube-shaped houses. The Venetian citadel dominating the Chora gives the island a Cycladic atmosphere. On a clear day, the islands of Anafi and Amorgos are easier to see than the other Dodecanese islands. The island is divided into two parts, Mesa and Exo nisi, which are linked by a narrow isthmus. Chora is built on a rock jutting out into the sea and offers two bays: the old port of Pera Gialos and the more relaxed, family-friendly port of Livadi. The Venetian citadel, also known as Castello Querini, dominates the town and offers panoramic sea views. Astypalea also boasts several charming villages, such as Maltezana, Vathi and Livadi, which are well worth a visit. The island's beaches are also very popular, offering turquoise waters and magnificent scenery. To get to Astypalea, you can fly from Athens or take a ferry from the port of Piraeus or other Cycladic or Dodecanese islands.
