BEACHES
Swim with the gigantic sea turtles in the emerald waters of the harbor in Kastellorizo.
The harbor. There are no beaches in Kastellorizo: you can bathe directly in the emerald waters of the harbor, via various access points built into the sea via ladders. The "beaches" on the quays are on either side of the harbor, on the terrace of the Faros café and on the esplanade of the Megisti hotel at the other end. And don't forget to swim with the caretta caretta sea turtles that come to feed in the harbor. The Mandraki harbor also offers access to the quays and a small sand spit.
Saint-Georges. For a swim beyond the waters of the harbor, you can take a sea-taxi to the islet of Saint-Georges. Here you'll find a number of pretty coves and a beach restaurant-bar open daily in season. You can rent deckchairs and umbrellas and enjoy traditional cuisine, including some Turkish specialities. A pleasant day out.
Plakes. The other option is to take a kayak, caique - or swim for the best swimmers - to the flat rocks of Plakes, beyond the Megisti hotel. These large marble slabs are sumptuous and slope gently down into the crystal-clear water. The caiques all disembark at the same spot, where the bottom allows them to dock, but you can move to other small coves for seclusion. There's no shade and no possibility of planting an umbrella in the hard rock, so come at the end of the day when the sun is cooler. You'll need to bring your own food and drink.
