ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Museum that housed the Hospital of the Knights of St. John.
This magnificent complex housed the Hospital of the Knights of St John, which cared for the sick and wounded during the Crusader period. Begun in 1440, it was completed under the authority of Pierre d'Aubusson, 40th Grand Master of the Order (1473-1503). The building, in Gothic style, has some Renaissance elements.
The inner courtyard is surrounded by a two-storey gallery, which serves the museum rooms. Before you go in, admire the mosaics in the courtyard: they come from a basilica in Karpathos, dating from the early Christians.
The rooms upstairs display the greatest archaeological treasures of Rhodes and the surrounding islands. The majority of the ancient collections come from excavations carried out by the Italians during their occupation of the region. Finds from the ancient sites of Ialissos and Kamiros are on display. Don't miss the masterpiece of Hellenistic art, Crouching Aphrodite, a marble sculpture from the 1st century BC. You can also admire tomb sculptures from various periods and origins, displayed in the large sick room and in the old medieval refectory. Note in particular a Roman sarcophagus "recovered" to serve as the tomb of Pierre de Corneillan (appointed Grand Master from 1353 to 1355) and funerary steles from late antiquity found on the island of Nissiros.
Agood deal to remember: the combined ticket with the entrance to the Palace of the Grand Master, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Castle, offers an interesting price
