Spa offering the curative properties of the waters of Kallithea.

The curative properties of Kallithea's waters have been known since ancient times: people travelled here not only from Rhodes, but also from Asia Minor, to treat digestive infections. But it was not until much closer to the present day that the spa became truly international in scope. The spa we still know today was built by the Italians in 1929. It represents one of the largest and most sumptuous examples of Fascist architecture in Rhodes. Soon after its inauguration, the spa welcomed patients from all over the world, but after a period of prosperity, activity slowed until it ceased altogether at the end of the 1960s. The complex reopened its doors in 2007, following renovation work that restored it to its former splendour: temporary exhibitions are held there on a regular basis. Today, visitors can tour the unique architectural buildings and soak up the retro ambience typical of sanatoria between the wars. The designs were created by architect Pietro Lombardi, and part of the work was completed under Armando Bernabiti, another great architect of the Fascist period in the Dodecanese. Note the two emblematic rotundas, the main one topped by a 14 m dome, stroll in the shade of flower-filled pergolas, admire the magnificent pebble mosaic floors and cool off by the pretty fountain adorned with an Eros. Finish off with a dip in the clear waters of the small sandy beach.
