BUTTERFLY VALLEY
Valley home to thousands of butterflies in a cool green forest.
From mid-June to mid-September, thousands of brightly-colored Callimorpha quadripunctaria butterflies spend time in a beautiful, cool, green forest. You'll see them on tree trunks, in the shade of foliage, or at root level. At rest, the wings of these butterflies are not very colorful, but you'll see an ocean of reds and oranges if a swarm takes flight. Unfortunately, too many tourists disturb these quiet creatures to see their wings spread: don't follow their example! The mass of visitors who flock here in season is tragic for these butterflies, whose population is declining more and more each year, and such behavior only exacerbates the decline of the species. Indeed, loud noises (whistling, clapping, screaming, etc.) are equated with a bat attack by the butterflies, which instinctively seek to flee their natural predator and take flight. In the panic and the rush, many of these fragile insects die: each flight provoked by tourists is a new hecatomb. It's crucial for these migratory butterflies to rest during the summer months before embarking on the long winter migration: respect nature and their rest! Visitors can wander through the picturesque beauty of the site, following a series of skilfully laid-out paths. You can also visit the Natural History Museum at the entrance to the site, dedicated to this unique ecosystem with its luxuriant vegetation.
