Imposing Byzantine fortress offering a popular place to walk among the pines
The imposing Byzantine fortress was enlarged in the 14th century by the Genoese Gatelouzo, and then by the Ottomans from the 15th century. Today, only three parts of the original Byzantine construction can be admired: a Byzantine gate to the north of the walls, the eastern wall of the central fortification and the reservoir in the center of the castle. In summer, the kastro is often the scene of artistic events. It is a popular place for walking, surrounded by pine trees. The view of Mytilini and the Turkish coast is splendid.
