MOLYVOS CASTLE
Byzantine castle with restored walls, wooden amphitheater and sections with beautiful views.
Unavoidable, the imposing silhouette of the citadel dominates the surroundings for several kilometers. Built in the Byzantine period on the site of an ancient wind city, the defensive castle occupied a strategic position to control the northern cape of Lesbos and the ships en route to Asia Minor. In the 14th century the Genoese Gattelusi took possession of the site and reinforced it, as did the Ottomans after them. The entrance is through the impressive main gate by taking a long series of steps: the view from these heights is spectacular.
