VILLAGES DANS LES TERRES
Karlovassi is a good base for discovering the unspoiled inland villages in the northwestern mountain foothills. Leaving the town for the higher ground, you can visit the pretty village of Leka, built during the Ottoman period: stop for a coffee in the central square, a real balcony over Karlovassi and the sea in the distance. Continue your ascent to Kastania, at the foot of Mount Kerkis, famous for its chestnut trees from which it takes its name. The road passes through wooded landscapes, dotted with small chapels.
Another road from Karlovassi plunges inland, towards the village of Konteika. Here, the road winds through vineyards, punctuated by large plane trees. The village square is particularly pleasant for a cool break or a drink. The winegrowers of the area meet here in August, to celebrate the harvest during big banquets. Continuing on the road, you will reach the village of Platanos: at 500 m of altitude, it offers beautiful views of the sea. The celebrations of the 15th of August are particularly well attended and festive, in the pretty central square shaded by plane trees (hence the name of the village).
In general, the hinterland of Karlovassi offers many possibilities of excursions on lost roads. However, be careful not to take dirt roads that are impassable with a class A rental car. Instead, stay on the main roads, which take you through beautiful scenery.
