AGHIOS NIKOLAOS
Monastery built after the victory against a pirate attack celebrated on May 20.
To the north-east of the island's capital, Kioni, is the monastery of Agios Nikolaos. It is said to have been built after a victory against a pirate attack. According to legend, the ship carrying the relics of St. Nicholas arrived from Italy to Ithaca in the port of Vathi on May 20, 1807. For this reason, this small church holds a big celebration every year on May 20. Inside the church, you will be able to see a work of art by the painter El Greco representing Christ scourged under the orders of Pontius Pilate.
