CHURCH OF CHRIST SAVIOR
Picturesque church located on the island Lazaretto, in front of the port of Vathy.
It is one of the most picturesque churches in Ithaca. The small white church of Christ the Saviour is located on the island of Lazaretto, opposite the port of Vathy. The island was used as a prison from 1864 before it was demolished by the earthquakes in 1953. On the island there are only trees and the small church built in 1668. The celebration of its saint, on August 6 each year, is the occasion of a great festival. The faithful go there in boats for vespers and liturgy and share the blessed bread on the spot.
