1. Visit the capital, Lefkada

Lefkada 's mix of preserved buildings and more recent construction gives ita special charm. To protect itself from earthquakes, the town was rebuilt with wooden houses and colorful corrugated iron, including church towers. You can appreciate this unique architecture by visiting the town's magnificent churches , such as Aghios Nikolaos (18th century), Aghios Dimitrios (17th century), the Church of the Apparition of the Virgin Mary and the Panaghia Faneromeni monastery. Despite rebuilding after the earthquakes of 1948 and 1953, Lefkada has retained its appeal, with lively alleyways in the evenings and a taverna-lined marina.

Built by the monk Vèniamin Kontrakis on a site once dedicated to Artemis or Hera, this monastery is steeped in history. It is believed that the apostle St. Paul preached here, as evidenced by the interior church dedicated to St. Paul and St. Peter. An on-site museum traces the fascinating history of this place. The monastery was probably built on an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Artemis or Hera. Situated on a hill overlooking the town of Lefkada and its bay, the site is also home to an area set aside for deer, geese, parrots and tortoises.

3. Agia Mavra Castle

Agiá Mavra Castle, also known as Santa Maura, is the most important historical site on Lefkada, one of the most beautiful Greek islands to discover. Located at the entrance to the island and the bridge linking it to the Greek mainland, you won't want to miss its imposing walls as you pass through. Originally built in 1300 by a French sovereign, the castle was rebuilt in the 16th century by the Venetians. Although the outer walls are well preserved, there is little left to see inside the fortress, with the exception of the small church of Agia Mavra and the ruins of buildings.

4. Discover Agios Nikitas, a pretty little fishing village

This charming seaside resort lies on the northwest coast, 4 km northwest of Karia and 10 km southwest of the town of Lefkada. Nestled around a bay, the village is built amphitheatrically amidst olive groves, in an enchanting landscape of lush greenery and white rocks. With a population of around 100, most of the inhabitants are fishermen and earn their living from tourism. The main reason for the village's appeal is Mylos beach, considered the most beautiful on the island. Although a little difficult to access, it's ideal for those looking to get away from the crowds.

5. Karia, a mountain village

Karia is a picturesque village located 13 km southwest of the town of Lefkada, nestled in the heart of verdant mountains. The area is ideal for hiking through forests and rivers. The village of Karia stands out for its traditional stone houses that have withstood earthquakes, giving the impression that time has stood still here, especially in the village square shaded by plane trees, where there are terraced cafés. Embroidery and tapestry are local specialties, and you can admire some of these works at the folk museum, housed in a traditional 19th-century house and open from 9am to 9pm in high season.

6. Getting to Nidri

The town is constantly bustling with the comings and goings of ferries and pleasure boats. We recommend Nidri mainly to those who enjoy bars, discos and restaurants serving international cuisine. Among the sights to see, Nidri is home tothe tomb of German archaeologist Dörpfeld, who believed he had located ancient Ithaca, the homeland of Ulysses, here. An emblematic site also attracts attention: the former private island where Aristotle Onassis and his two children, Christina and Alexander, are buried, is located in the Ionian Sea, just opposite Nidri. Although it has since been bought out, it remains, by far, a curiosity on the island.

This cruise from Nidri will allow you to discover the forgotten islands of Lefkada. You'll make 4 stops on superb beaches and visit a traditional village: the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
