ANAFONITRIA MONASTERY
Monastery where Saint Dionysus lived, with impressive frescoes.
The monastery of Anafonitria is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was founded in the middle of the 15th century during the Venetian occupation. In this monastery lived Saint Dionysus, the patron saint of the island, he became a monk and spent the last days of his life there. Inside the church is an icon that gave its name to the monastery of the Virgin Anafonitria. The icon was brought back from Istanbul when the city was invaded by the Turks. The frescoes in the church are impressive and worth a look. Inside the compound, you will also see a defensive tower.
