CHURCHES

The island has 360 of them, 123 of them in the Chora alone. The church of Eisodia tis Theotokou (Presentation of the Virgin Mary) is on the port. The most interesting are: Aghios Athanassios (9th century), near the fort, built above a temple of Athena; Aghios Mihail Synadon with ancient icons, five Roman sarcophagi and a 2nd century inscription; Aghioi Apostoloi, by the sea, with beautiful 17th century wall paintings; and Episkopi, at the western end of the city, built from the remains of an ancient temple.
