LE SUD DE L'ÎLE

The south of Skyros offers a very different face from the rest of the island: here the vegetation disappears in favor of rocky and pebbled landscapes, which are organized around large bays in the west, before taking height around Mount Kochillas, up to the Ari plateau which falls into the sea by impressive cliffs at the southern tip. The eastern coast of the south remains inaccessible.

It is in these wild and beautiful lands that some Skyrian horses still live. In season, it is difficult to see them because they flee from the world. Although visits are limited in this remote area, the passing of a few cars on the main road is enough to scare these wild animals. In the off-season, early morning hikers may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of them on the Ari plateau where they live. Indeed, this region of Skyros will be a delight for hikers.

There is only one road that goes south: it first reaches the wide bay of Kalamitsa, 6 km from Linaria. It is a family beach reminiscent of Cycladic landscapes and offers a handful of simple rooms, a pleasant tavern and a few sunbeds and umbrellas. The road continues along the west coast where there are a few coves that are sometimes difficult to access. Park along the road when you feel like it and take a swim here. After Nyfi, we leave the coast and civilization to explore the arid beauty of the heights: along the main road, admire the endemic flora and watch out for goats!
