PLACE RUPERT BROOKE
Place with the statue of Rupert Brooke in Skyros.
A solitary statue facing the sea makes this English poet a local boy after a short and eventful life. Born in 1887, Rupert Brooke is known for his idealistic anti-war poems. But he was mobilized by the Royal Navy at the age of 27 and took part in the "Antwerp expedition" in October 1914. He developed septicemia and died on April 23, 1915, on his way to the battle of Gallipoli, on a hospital ship off the island of Skyros. He was buried here by chance, in an isolated corner of the south of the island, where his grave is still located.
