SITE DE PALAMARI
The splendid site of Palamari is located at the northern tip of Skyros, about equidistant from Atsitsa and Magazia: we indicate it from Atsitsa because this road will make you discover the beach of Kyra Panaghia and its beach bar, then the lonely landscapes of this region of the island. A good opportunity to see another face of Skyros. The archaeological site is accessible from the main road: take the indicated fork in the road at a sharp bend and drive on a track that crosses agricultural land for 2.5 km. It takes a little effort to reach this land at the end of the world, but you will not be disappointed by the historical charge of the place.
Indeed, the site of Palamari offers a unique dive into time immemorial: this city built and inhabited in the Bronze Age is a unique testimony of the sedentary life of the Neolithic. The fortifications of the 3rd millennium B.C. are preserved on about 200 m, and one can still distinguish some bastions as well as the ditches which encircled the city crossed by streets where many one-storey houses stood. Its apogee was probably reached from 2800 to 1600 BC.
Planted on a peninsula beaten by the winds, at the edge of a large bay and a port, the city watched over the horizons while cultivating the fertile marshes of the surroundings and trading precious metals extracted from local quarries. A position that ensured the durability of these prehistoric inhabitants, with a strong social organization.
