CHURCH OF OUR SEÑORA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN
Old three-aisled church of the city with a sculpture and a large collection of goldsmith's art of great historical value
Built in 1502 by Fernandez de Lugo to celebrate Tenerife's first Corpus Christi, it is the oldest church in the city and on the island. It has the characteristic shape of a Canarian temple, with its three naves, semicircular arches and Mudejar-style pine coffered ceiling. It was renovated and partly rebuilt in 1974 after the collapse of its naves. The unadorned facade features a beautiful wooden door encased in black basalt. Its pulpit, a Baroque piece carved from noble wood in the late 18th century, is considered a unique gem, as is its basalt bell tower, erected in 1697. The 15th-century Seville ceramic baptismal font is of great historical value, as legend has it that it was brought by the first governor and used to baptize Tenerife's first Guanches. Of particular note is the sculpture La Predilecta (La Dolorosa) by José Julán Pérez. Large collection of silverware.
