CASTILLO DE SAN FELIPE
Pentagonal fortress near the old port with a cultural center to program concerts and exhibitions of artists
This fort, built between 1641 and 1655, was one of four castles erected by Spanish colonists to defend the town from repeated pirate attacks at the time. It is strategically located at the entrance to the San Felipe barranco, near the old port. This pentagonal fortress was the city's most important military stronghold, equipped with three cannons. Later, the drawbridge was replaced by a footbridge over the pits. From 1878 onwards, the site was used as a leper asylum, a hospital, a warehouse, a shooting gallery and finally a restaurant. Restored in the 1990s, the site is now a privileged cultural center, hosting concerts and artists' exhibitions. Just 50 m from the château, you'll find the former powder magazine that supplied the cannons with ammunition.
