LAGO MARTIÁNEZ
Artificial lagoon with Canarian vegetal elements, consisting of pools, tropical gardens, terraces and restaurants
Almost 33,000 m² of land, completely reclaimed from the sea, form an artificial lagoon with pools, tropical gardens, terraces and restaurants, all built from volcanic stone by the mad, avant-garde genius of Canarian artist César Manrique. El Lago, as it's known here, was built on a succession of charcos and small beaches where the first tourists bathed at the beginning of the 20th century. The first municipal swimming pools designed by the artist were inaugurated in 1971, with mobiles such as Les Alizés and La Jimba at their center, which are masterpieces of the artist's work but remain children's games. A few years later, the town council decided to think bigger and asked Manrique to create an artificial lagoon, which was finally inaugurated in 1977. César Manrique introduced many Canarian plant elements to create a symbiosis between the building and nature. A must-see during the day and also in the evening, from outside, to enjoy the night-time illumination of the pools.
