LORO PARK
Amusement park on a very touristy island with the world's largest collection of parrots and other species
This is Tenerife's biggest attraction for children. This is a theme park on a very touristy island, so it's nothing like the Canaries. While Loro Parque is home to the world's largest collection of parrots, the animals are far from wild. Macaws and cockatoos put on a show, performing tricks and a free-flying act. We feel rather sorry for these poor birds, even if the children have a good laugh. Other crowd-pleasers at include dolphins, sea lions and orcas in synchronized American-style shows. The park also exhibits tigers, gorillas, chimpanzees, crocodiles, turtles, pelicans, crowned cranes and Chilean flamingos, zoo-style, in cages... not very pleasing if you can't stand seeing animals locked up behind bars. Numerous species of fish evolve in several aquariums, the highlight of the show being a 17 m long shark tunnel and a 300 m² artificial ice floe for penguins.
