CONSULATE HOUSE
The superb façade features an arcaded first floor.
At the corner of rue de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and rue Croizier, stop to admire the superb façade of the Maison des Consuls. Although it bears this name, the Consuls of Riom - the town's former representatives under the Ancien Régime - never lived here. If you're wondering why it was so named, look up above the arcaded gallery on the first floor and the row of mullioned windows: you'll see carved medallions, two of which depict men dressed in antique style, reminiscent of the Roman Consuls. The turret at the corner and the high roof add to the prestige of this 16th-century mansion.
