CHURCH OF THE ASUNCIÓN
Church with a collection of paintings by anonymous painters, a crucifixion by Lujan Pérez and magnificent altarpieces
The main church of the city dates from the th century and gathers a collection of paintings of anonymous painters from the th to the th century, a Crucifixion of Luján Pérez, and magnificent altarpieces. Rebuilt after pirate attacks in the th century and following the devastation it was not spared, the Church of Asunción is a mixture of Mudéjar, Baroque and Gothic style. The Puerta del Perdón (the forgiveness door) recalls the popular uprising following the murder of Hernán Peraza le Jeune in 1488. His widow Beatriz de Bobadilla promised forgiveness to all the rebels who would pass under his vault. Above all, this offer was designed to identify the perpetrators who were quickly put to death.
