CASTILLO DEL MAR
Castle transformed into a cultural platform for living history, theater and folklore by Thomas K. Müller
This place is unfortunately closed at the moment, and its reopening does not seem to be considered. El Castillo is the name of a small port complex built in 1890 in Vallehermoso, on a progress of ocean-washed rocks. This castle was, in fact, a boat port of bananas grown in the island and loaded onto steam vessels. For thirty years, the building was cut off from the continent, delivered to elements and forgotten. Until the day Thomas K. Müller, a long-standing photographer in La Gomera, discovers the sleeping castle.
Then we were in 1981 and the artist decided to buy it. It was still years before the access road was repaired. It transformed the place into a cultural platform dedicated to living history, theatre, folklore, classical music, multimedia and film projections. Many local and international celebrities took place at the Castillo del Mar, attracting a large audience in the bay of Vallehermoso, with the majestic peak of Teide on the island of Tenerife. But the money failed and the place, which the powers did not want to subsidize, had to close.
