Natural swimming pools in La Caleta, a heavenly setting for a swim in clear waters with beautiful turquoise colors
The island of El Hierro is a bit of a paradise of natural pools. Bordered by jagged cliffs with often sparkling black rocks, they offer a heavenly setting for a swim in clear, turquoise waters. In this part of the island, you will find one in the north, the Pozo de las Calcosas, (in the direction of El Mocanal). This first stop will also be the occasion, after the bath, to visit the small village of El Mocanal. You will find a second natural swimming pool in the direction of Echedo, the Charco Manso. They are often bordered by a few huts that serve as summer homes for the Herreños. La caleta also has a natural swimming pool, ideal for young and old. This is where the Bimbaches, an aboriginal people from the island of El Hierro, came to bathe. They had left petroglyphs, carved in stone along the boardwalk that follows the coast, which testified to this passage. This testimony of their presence has unfortunately not been well preserved since these traces were damaged or erased by mistake during the redevelopment of the beach. Finally, the small village of Tamaduste also shelters a small cove where one can swim with pleasure in its limpid waters. Here too in a setting marked by the black lava coast, dotted with volcanic arches beaten by the waves. Once the water has receded, be ready to go rock crab fishing.
