Building with a museum with an explanatory card exhibiting a collection of Spanish paintings and models of ships
It was within the walls of this building, comprising several 15th- and 16th-century houses, that Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed in 1492, on his way to the New World. The navigator also stopped off in Gran Canaria in 1493 on his second voyage. The façade of his house, however, was restored in the 18th century: it features a magnificent carved portal and, like the house opposite, a high wooden balcony. Inside is a museum dedicated to the great discoveries, featuring a collection of Spanish paintings from the 17th to the 19th centuries. There are also models of 15th-century ships and a replica of La Niña. This is also the home of the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, with works by Canary Island artists, Spanish painters and sculptors. If only for its interior architecture and ceilings, this museum is well worth a visit. There's even an explanatory sheet in each room, translated into French.
