TEMISAS OBSERVATORIO
Astronomical observatory of Temisas at 850 m of altitude with a terrace equipped with several instruments
The professional observatories of the Canary Islands are part of the "golden triangle" of world astronomy, along with those of Hawaii and Chile. Since 2000, Gran Canaria Island has also had its own scientific institution called the Canary Observatory Foundation of Temisas. It launched one of the first regular astronomy popularization programs on the island. Although it also collaborates with various research programmes, its observatory, the Temisas Astronomical Observatory, focuses mainly on the discovery of the sky as part of the development of the local natural and tourist heritage. It is located 6.5 km from the GC-550 road, only 25 minutes from Gran Canaria airport, and about 45 minutes from the island's largest cities such as Las Palmas and Maspalomas. It is located at an altitude of 850 m, on the banks of the Caldera de Tirajana, a site with an exceptionally dry, transparent and dark sky, particularly to the north, south and west. However, to the east, towards the densely populated Balos and Arinaga area, weak and low celestial objects on the horizon are less accessible due to light pollution. The main observatory building houses a 355 mm diameter telescope capable of providing pretty images of most pointed celestial objects. A terrace is also at your disposal, equipped with several other instruments, allowing observations of all types depending on the number of participants registered.
