Mountain protected as a natural monument with a hiking trail with a sign with detailed information
Situated at more than 400 metres above sea level, this mountain is now protected as a "natural monument". It is a singular site of great beauty. First of all, it has particular morphological characteristics. The process of erosion was intense and today we can observe a monolithic block composed mainly of trachyte, a material resembling marble. Protected for its geological value and as a natural area, this site is also protected for its archaeological value. Archaeologists have indeed found more than 300 rock engravings of foot contours carved by the Aborigines: 213 drawings engraved on 57 sections of rock and 29 other silhouettes, distributed in different places throughout the mountain. Four main motifs emerge from this set. Human foot silhouettes are the most common pattern, appearing singly or in groups of two. They measure 20 centimetres on average and short, parallel lines at the ends represent the toes. Another series of rectangular drawings were also interpreted as human feet, but more abstract, without toes. A third series of drawings are interpreted as a succession of feet, but not as complete drawings. Finally, a series of motifs, difficult to interpret, appear unfinished, fragmented or erased by erosion and lichens. At present, these signs have led archaeologists to see in them the evidence of funerary structures and an observation of the stars. The ascent of this mountain is possible, but it is necessary to obtain prior authorization from the Environmental Office of the Island Administration of Fuerteventura, which can be issued by the town halls of Puerto del Rosario and Corralejo. It is done first by a track that cannot be driven on, then by a path along a stony ridge in the colours of brown, red, black and white. At the beginning of the hiking trail, a sign will provide you with detailed information about this natural monument. From a distance of about two kilometres, the climb is not very difficult, but it has to be tackled, quietly, without hurrying. First of all because of the difference in altitude and also for the many details that we will encounter throughout. It is of course essential not to leave these marked trails to protect this archaeological heritage. At the top, the panoramic view is spectacular, especially towards the golden, desert-coloured Montana Prieta (208 m).
