CASTILLO DE SAN GABRIEL
Fortin on a small island near the city housing a museum of archaeological heritage in modern and contemporary times
Built in 1573 on an islet close to the town, this small, massive fort, with its two cannons at the entrance, was designed to repel privateers and pirates. It quickly proved its worth, undergoing an attack by the dreaded Morato Arraez in 1586. It is linked to land by a dike and a graceful 18th-century bridge, the puente de las Bolas. Since December 10, 2014, it has been home to the Arrecife History Museum. Which shows visitors the geology, landscapes, flora and fauna, but also the history of Arrecife, from archaeological heritage to modern and contemporary times.
