MUSEO ATLANTICO
First underwater museum offering an impressive collection of hyper-realistic sculptures of human size and appearance
Opened since January1, 2017, it is the first underwater museum in Europe. Just a stone's throw from Playa Blanca, it allows visitors to contemplate the impressive collection of some 300 sculptures created by the British artist Jacon de Caires Taylor. Completely immersed at 15 m and spread over 2,500 square metres, among the marine fauna and flora, made of neutral pH concrete, these hyper-realistic sculptures of human size and appearance, sometimes moulded on the inhabitants of the island of Lanzarote, have a double objective. Firstly, to evoke daily life, the migratory crisis and the environment, but also to create an artificial reef which, in the long term, will increase the biodiversity of plants and fish present in this environment. After the artificial reef refuge on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean and the one in Cancún, this is the third museum created by this artist, considered in 2014 as one of the hundred most innovative personalities on the planet. Several options are available for the visit: diving, snorkeling... Don't forget to find out about the authorized companies before scheduling a visit. Indeed, if you want to discover the Atlantic Museum, you must do so through approved companies, employing instructors who have received EGD (Eco Divers Guides) training. The visit lasts about 1 hour, starting from the jetty of the Rubicon marina, with a guide. Diving attire is required.
