ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL
Designed by architect William Wilkinson Wardell, this cathedral is a fine example of neo-Gothic architecture.
This cathedral is one of Australia's most valuable historic buildings and a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture. It was designed by William Wilkinson Wardell, a renowned 19th century architect who was responsible for other masterpieces including the University of Sydney. The building, begun in 1868, was finally completed 100 years later. Its two large spires reaching 75 m above sea level make it the fourth highest cathedral in Australia, after St. Patrick's and St. Paul's in Melbourne, and the Sacred Heart in Bendigo.
