SAINT JAMES CHURCH
Designed by architect Francis Greenway, this church is an excellent example of the architectural work of the Macquarie period.
Built between 1819 and 1824, Saint James Church is Sydney's oldest church. Designed and built entirely by convicts (its architect, Francis Greenway (1777-1837), was a convict himself), it is an excellent example of the architectural work of the Macquarie period. Originally intended as a courthouse, the building's purpose was changed when plans to build a large cathedral on the site of St Andrew 's Cathedral were cancelled. A bell tower was added to the plans at the last minute.
