FORT DENISON
This tiny islet in the middle of Sydney Harbour was an open-air prison for the most recalcitrant convicts.
Originally known as Pinchgut, Fort Denison was, among other things, an open-air prison for the most recalcitrant convicts. This tiny islet lies in the middle of Sydney Harbour, about 1 km east of the Opera House and northeast of the Royal Botanic Garden. Construction work underway in 2024 will deprive tourists of access to the Fort. However, you can still enjoy the view of Fort Denison from one of the ferries plying the area. Plans to transform the site also include the opening of a high-end restaurant.
