SYDNEY HOSPITAL
Old hospital built in 1811, home to the Sydney Hospital and its arcaded galleries and sandstone walkways.
It is the oldest hospital in Australia, built in 1811 to replace a first makeshift hospital made of tents. It is called The Rum Hospital, after Governor Macquarie who rewarded the builders of the building with a monopoly on the sale of rum. From 1829 onwards, Parliament House occupied the north wing of the Rum Hospital. The lamps at the entrance are reproductions of the gas lamps used in the 19th century. The central building now houses the Sydney Hospital with its arcaded galleries and sandstone walkways.
