PYRMONT BRIDGE
Built between 1899 and 1902, this swing bridge in Sydney is reserved for cyclists and pedestrians.
Built between 1899 and 1902, Pyrmont Bridge is the oldest electrically controlled swing bridge in the world. Swaying refers to the ability of the bridge to pivot sideways on its central axis to allow the passage of large ships. Opened in 1902, it replaced a first bridge dating from 1857. Wood was used extensively to reduce construction costs. Since the restructuring of Darling Harbour in 1988, it is exclusively reserved for the use of cyclists and pedestrians.
