THE MINT
An establishment with a design inspired by ancient Greek architecture, presenting an exhibition on the history of the site.
In 1816, the building began as a medical dispensary, an annex of Governor Macquarie's General Hospital (now Sydney Hospital), before becoming the first Royal Mint outside England in 1854. Its design was inspired by ancient Greek architecture with two tiers of cedar columns in the style of Doric mouldings. The inwardly sloping columns create an optical illusion that mimics the Parthenon. It now houses an exhibition recalling the history of the site and a café.
