Centennial Park is an important part of Australian history and culture. The area was once the territory of the Gadi people, before they were decimated by settlers. In 1825, convicts built a 3.5 km aqueduct to supply water to Sydney. In 1888, Sir Henry Parkes decided to create a large Victorian-style park here. Men were enlisted to clear the swamps to make way for gardens, ponds and statues. On January1, 1901, the Australian Federation was proclaimed here.
