COCKATOO ISLAND
This island at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers is home to a prison built by prisoners.
Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour. It is located at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove rivers, about 10 minutes by ferry west of Circular Quay. It was in 1839 that Governor Gipps chose Cockatoo Island as the site of a new prison to relieve congestion on Norfolk Island. The prison, built by the prisoners, operated until 1869, before being used until 1888 as a workhouse and correctional facility for girls, and then again as a prison until 1908, when it was closed.
