STATUE D'EMMA MILLER
Famous statue in Speaker's Corner of Emma Miller (1839-1917), a leading figure in the suffragist movement.
Emma Miller (1839-1917) was a leading figure in the suffragist movement. A trade unionist, she was the first woman to join the Brisbane Workers' Political Union, and became president of the Queensland Working Women's Political Union in 1903. In addition to the right to vote, economic equality was her greatest struggle. A seamstress, she herself lived in great economic precariousness, particularly following the untimely death of her husband. A statue in Brisbane's Speaker's Corner celebrates her. A square is also dedicated to her.
