PORCUPINE GORGE NATIONAL PARK

The high gorges bordered by pines, eucalyptus and tea trees form a striking contrast to the surrounding arid plain. The stream has dug an impressive canyon nearly 120 m long. Further on, it is a spectacular pyramid that stands at the water's edge. Look for black ducks, with their thin white masks around their eyes, pardalotes (small coloured passerines), honeyeaters, who feed on the nectar of flowers. A campground is located near the pyramid. A permit is required (www.des.qld.gov.au). As the number of permits issued is limited, it is necessary to book in advance during school holidays.
