Rarely visited by tourists, Darwin's markets nevertheless play an essential role in the lives of Darwinites, who buy their tropical fruit and vegetables here, often sold directly by the growers. There are street food specialities from all over the world. You can feel (and taste) the proximity of Southeast Asia. Try: green papaya salad, mango lassi or a Top End version of laksa (spicy!), which has become a real local specialty. Bring cash with you. Parap Markets on Saturdays are also a must.
