NOURLANGIE ROCK
A perfectly appointed place housing ancient Aboriginal paintings depicting the Thunder Man of Dreamtime.
Called Burrunkuy in Gundjeihmi, this site, perfectly arranged, is one of the most visited of the park and shelters ancient aboriginal paintings. The paintings in the Anbangang Gallery include Namarrgon, the Thunder Man of Dreamtime. The site also includes a walk to a viewpoint on the majestic cliffs of Arnhem Land, where there are many sites sacred to the Aborigines, including the Lightning Dreaming, where Namarrgon lives. All of this is easily accessible by a 1.5km circuit perfect for all ages.
Those who enjoy serenity and a bit of walking (3.5 km back, but often in the sun) will love the Nanguluwurr Gallery, which allows you to see the full range of natural ochres used as well as paintings depicting fish, animals and a European ship dating from the first contacts.
The area is full of beautiful walks that allow you to enjoy the sensational scenery, especially at sunset, with the cliffs as a backdrop and the local fauna and flora, especially the birds of the Anbangbang Billabong, which is also a great place for a picnic. The Nawurlandja Lookout offers another perspective worth seeing.
A little further on, Mirray Lookout, which is reached by a rocky path through a typical Kakadu forest. At the top, a spectacular 360° panorama on the infinite vegetation. 2 km round trip, some climbs are very steep, bring enough water and good shoes.
