Dead tree located at Daly Waters to find an engraving made by explorer John McDouall Stuart in 1862.
On the road to the town of Daly Waters, from the Stuart Highway. The explorer John McDouall Stuart is said to have carved a large S on the trunk of this dead tree in 1862, during his third attempt to cross Australia from south to north, which led him from Adelaide to Darwin. The purpose of this crossing was to initiate the construction of the telegraph line. The mark on the tree is hardly visible and it is a plaque erected in 1944 that indicates its existence. The telegraph line arrived at Daly Waters in June 1872 and was completed three months later.
