ARALUEN CULTURAL PRECINCT
Alice Springs-based cultural complex housing the Museum of Central Australia, the Strehlow Centre and an art gallery.
Araluen is the region's cultural complex and home to a number of institutions.
The Museum of Central Australia focuses on the natural history of the Red Centre. The evolution of the landscape and the wildlife that inhabits the region are presented. Fossils, meteorites and explanations of the geology of this unique region are on display to give you a different perspective on the landscape.
The Strehlow Centre displays part of its colossal archive on Aboriginal culture and history, including the collections of Ted Strehlow, linguist-anthropologist and son of a missionary based in Hermannsburg, west of Alice. There's also the Aviation Museum and the Municipal Theatre, which doubles as an arthouse cinema and concert hall.
Not to bemissed, the art gallery inthe theater building showcases the region's art, from ancestral Aboriginal art to contemporary artists, including some works by the famous Albert Namatjira. Every September, Desert Mob, one of the country's most renowned exhibitions of Aboriginal art, is held here (perfect for ethical art buying).
In a different style, the astonishing Beanie Festival in June is probably the world's largest beanie exhibition: knitters from all over the country send in their best creations. Outside, Aboriginal plants, sculptures and information on Aboriginal spiritual sites.
The Yaye café (meaning sisters in Arrernte) offers snacks for a quick break.
