HORSE DRAWN TRAM
Old horse-drawn streetcar car on The Causeway, linking Granite Island and Victor Harbor.
This is an old horse-drawn streetcar car on The Causeway, a long pier that connects Granite Island and Victor Harbor by about 630 meters. Because it was difficult and dangerous for steamboats traveling on the Murray River to cross the mouth of the Murray to the sea, in 1851 work began on the construction of a railroad between Goolwa and Port Elliot. In May 1854, Australia's first public railroad became operational. Horses were used, instead of steam engines, to keep costs down.
