MARIA ISLAND CAMPING GROUND
After taking the ferry to the island, visitors can begin their exploration at Darlington Probation Station, an Australian World Heritage Site. From Darlington, it's possible to walk or cycle the many trails and leave everyday life behind. The spectacular cliffs around eastern Maria Island provide the perfect vantage point from which to watch birds diving into the ocean. In season, it's even possible to catch a glimpse of the whales that frequent these waters on their annual migration. On the west side of the island, the Painted Cliffs are one of Maria Island's most memorable sights, showcasing the power of nature in their wind- and wave-eroded contours. Access to the Painted Cliffs rock platform is safest within two hours of low tide. There is no access to the Painted Cliffs from the top of the cliffs. Maria Island is a special place where long sandy beaches, turquoise waters, panoramic mountain-top views, abundant wildlife and multi-layered human history come together to create the perfect island destination.
