Only for experienced and prepared hikers, the Overland Track winds its way 65 km through the region's spectacular alpine scenery, passing at the foot of the island's highest mountain, Mount Ossa. It takes an average of 6 days to complete. The vast majority of hikers do the trail in the north-south direction, which is mandatory in summer. Twelve huts are scattered along the Overland Track. They can sometimes be full. The huts are rudimentary: their only comfort is the coal stove. To cook, you have to bring your own stove.
