From Strahan, a small gravel road leads to the community of Macquarie Heads, home to the Hells Gates, the entrance to Macquarie Harbour. Macquarie Harbour is Australia's second-largest harbour, after Sydney. The Cape Sorell Lighthouse at the far end of the bay marks the entrance to the harbour channel. The name Hell's Gate was given to the place by convicts arriving by boat at Strahan. They saw it as the gates of Hell.
