CAPE LEEUWIN LIGHTHOUSE
A lighthouse where you can see humpback whales migrating from polar waters to the warm waters of the equator.
Its name, chosen by the English navigator Flinders in 1801, comes from the first European explorers, Dutch, who had named these lands after their ship, Leeuwin, the lioness. Its lighthouse stands on the irregular edges of the coast where the two oceans meet. From May to October, humpback whales migrating from polar waters to the warm waters of the equator can be seen from the coast. For sailors, it is one of the three Great Capes of the Southern Seas, along with Good Hope and Horn. It is also one of the two ends of the Cape to Cape trek.
