HMAS SYDNEY MEMORIAL
Magnificent open-air memorial to the Australian sailors lost on board the warship HMAS Sydney.
Beautiful open-air memorial overlooking the city and ocean. The site commemorates the 645 Australian sailors who died aboard the warship HMAS Sydney II during World War II, the greatest tragedy in Australian naval history. The HMAS Sydney encountered the German cruiser Kormoran while returning to port. The Australian ship sank without a trace or survivors, and no one knew why. The wreck was not found until 2008. The Kormoran also sank, but left 318 survivors out of 390 sailors.
