A magical landscape nestled in the heart of the Kimberley offers unique experiences and unforgettable memories

El Questro nestles in the heart of the Kimberley, in the Kununurra region. Amidst the vast, ancient landscape of Western Australia's eastern Kimberley region, lies the indomitable natural beauty of El Questro. It's a destination unlike any other, offering the freedom to explore one of Australia's last frontiers and one of the world's wildest regions. From deep gorges and majestic mountains to hot springs, mud and sand, rainforests and cascading waterfalls, everything the Kimberley has to offer is located on the property's nearly 300,000 ha, and that's why we say El Questro is the heart of the Kimberley! El Questro is a magical, ancient landscape where unique experiences abound and unforgettable memories are created. You can stay at El Questro Emma Gorge, El Questro Station or El Questro Homestead, depending on your level of comfort. If self-guided adventures are your thing, simply pick up a map at reception, or chat to a ranger for advice. It's hard to know where to start! That's why we've provided maps and suggested itineraries.

Here you can explore the waterfalls (some are accessible on foot, others only visible from a helicopter!), hike (several levels of difficulty), bathe in waterholes or hot springs, discover ancient gorges amid lush tropical gardens and waterfalls, fish in places unique in the world (some only accessible by helicopter), admire exceptional panoramas from the manylookout points, discover powerful river systems (three of which run through El Questro), observe the flora and fauna with over a hundred species of birds and many unique plant species, and choose accommodation either under the stars at a campsite or in a luxurious lodge at El Questro Homestead.

As for the history of the place, nobody knows why the resort is called El Questro. There's a lot of guesswork involved, the mystery adding to the charm of the place. All we know is that the name was given by Torrance McMicking in 1958. While the lease has changed hands several times, it was in 1991 that Will and Celia Burrell recognized the potential for tourism and purchased the pastoral lease that same year. In the space of 14 years, the Burrells have pursued their dream of transforming El Questro into a unique Kimberley experience by offering a variety of accommodation, from camping to 5-star luxury, accessible to all.

Emma Gorge is one of the Kimberley's most beautiful waterfalls. Not to be missed! To reach it, you'll take an hour's walk along the river and between the rocks. There are markings on the rocks so you don't get lost along the way. At the finish line, a breathtakingly beautiful waterfall awaits you. The water is icy cold, but if you swim to the right, you'll find "hot springs" where warm water flows along the rocks. You can sit on the hot rocks to warm up before heading back to shore through the icy water! For the hike, plan to get there early with good walking shoes, as it's easy to slip on the rocks.
